Ah you did get it working again! So the HDD's okay, wonder what the problem was then... file corruption? Have you run CHKDSK on it? Something with the bios?

Ah you did get it working again! So the HDD's okay, wonder what the problem was then... file corruption? Have you run CHKDSK on it? Something with the bios?
Not sure what the initial problem was but there is still some stuff to sort out. Computer in general is back up and running fairly smoothly, but my audio workspace has some errors, plugins not working properly etc... gotta deep dive and note and fix everything at some point but it's a mammoth task... Indeed chkdsk have been run (some other stuff too) and that part of things seems solved now at least :) Planning to clean up the HDD then clone it to a newer one and continue on that, then use the old one as a backup system in case of major disaster.
Sounds like a good plan! Ought clone some drives myself, that's an easy way to keep a failsafe if the whole system fails, usually I just backup files I work with...
Curious what actually happened though, and what you did to fix it? It seemed like it wouldn't boot at all, but did it finally just start working after all? Startup repairs and stuff?
Yeah me too. I usually just back up the files, but it'd be a major pain in the ass setting up the software ecosystem again if there was a major breakdown or loss...
No idea why the intial error, but it wouldn't boot, or start-up repair, or even (try to) system restore. I did some scans and stuff at the command prompt, and somewhere there it allowed me to start trying to force a system restore at least, to which it failed to roll back to 3 different start points, but after that, it somehow kicked something so that it would boot up again, but then there some resolution and other issues, programs not working, or the licence/authorisation for them not connecting, etc... At the moment, it seems to be mostly back to normal now (drivers updated too), but I still need to go through all my programs and plugins one by one and note and fix all the errors... example of an error, I have a library program for the BBC Orchestra (to play in my own tracks) but now when I try to open it, there's no instruments there, it's just an empty "room" DX Not ideal...
Mmm, thinking about how I'd go about cloning drives frequently it wouldn't be that hard, I don't have a huge HDD in the computer so it'd be pretty quick to clone, the computer's easy to open, the docking station does such operations automatically... must just be very careful to not clone the wrong drive to the wrong drive, as I once did with an old game collection. XD
I guess you at least managed to get into the BIOS when you were starting up then, it booted that far at least? Any error messages? Man that's strange... maybe some file corruption, or some kind of virus, that's hopefully overwritten now then... btw CMOS battery issues sometimes cause weird problems if the time starts resetting, with software that checks licenses as per a particular date, updates after ditto, restores after ditto, things like that... so strange that it started working after all though after all that though! Shouldn't be the battery then. Mysterious.
Interesting to read about anyhow. Hope you get it all back on track and it doesn't come back again...
Looks like the drive cloning thing will be postponed now as the drive I was going to be cloning to seems to be broken (not recognised by Windows or the Bios and makes an unsettling ticking sound when starting up...). Sounds like it'd be a good plan in the future though. Dang that's something I'm super scared of (writing over the wrong drive). Good to have backups not-clones just in case!
Seems to be working mostly normally again now with the old drives in a new tower. The only thing which doesn't seem to have transferred correctly and I can't seem to fix is the plugin I use for my BTTB Horns DX It's stuck in demo mode, which is full featured but mutes itself after 15 minutes so it's a pain... trying to resolve that, but having a lot of trouble (contacting tech support now). Apart from that it's just one more license to transfer over but that should hopefully be ok. Getting there, but not ideal...
Oh dang. :/ So it was the drive huh... that ticking sound's no good, I recognize that.... think you'll make do with file backups after all then, or try to send it somewhere for recovery? If you do, it's best to not try to boot too much before then, if the needle/platter's not spinning as intended it might get more damaged each time you try to start it...
Yeah writing over that drive was no fun. XD Not super-important files, but I'd spend quite some time collecting games for it... it's definitely one of this things you'd just best never do when tired! Made the mistake late night. Otherwise it's fortunately pretty clear which drive goes where on the docking station. If I start doing this regularly it just dawned on me it's probably a good idea to mark the source drive too, with a green sticker or something, so you just never accidentally swap 'em either.
Ohh it was the backup drive that was ticking! Well that's a relief. Misread. Mmm sounds like it's going the right way at least, Ganbatte!
Yeah just the new drive that I was going to clone to. Both my in use drives (and file back ups) are fine albeit maybe a bit old on the former, but they're working thankfully :) Good plan on sticker labels! And DEFINITELY the not something to do while tired thing DX I still need to go through my WIP projects to make sure they're running correctly. Cheers!
Awesome. :) Well hope you get a clone of it going soon, you never know! Cheers man!

I do hope you'll be able to salvage as much as possible from your old PC. Hope good new will prevail from now on

Thanks so much. After much cmd prompt poking and some extra help from friends, we finally managed to get it booted up again, but there's still some stuff to sort out as somethings still not quite right... biggest hurdle seems to be over now though thankfully. Hopefully it'll be back and up and running properly soon.
